Pickleball in Hazlet, New Jersey

Hazlet has made outdoor pickleball easy to find, with two six court complexes and a smaller neighborhood option. Beers Street Park opened six new courts in October 2025, and Veterans Park has six pickleball courts beside two tennis courts. Both give local groups a practical public place to play. Hazlet Recreation also runs beginner and intermediate classes indoors at the James J. Cullen Center.

The town's public courts are best for players who already have partners, since the township does not publish a standing staffed rotation. Beginners can enter through a six week recreation class. Public Courts Around Town

Beers Street Park has six purpose built pickleball courts next to the Beers Street schools. The courts are available from dawn to dusk and close during wet weather. A dedicated parking area serves the complex. Chairs are not allowed on the playing surface, so use the installed seating and keep bags clear of court entrances.

Veterans Park, at 1776 Union Avenue, has six pickleball courts and two tennis courts. The courts are open to residents, Hazlet Swim and Tennis Club members, and the general public. Access is first come, and park hours run from dawn to dusk. The larger recreation campus also includes the James J. Cullen Community Center, playground, picnic areas, skate park, and municipal buildings, which makes it convenient when a household has activities beyond pickleball.

Freedom Park, at 8th Street and Brown Avenue, has one additional pickleball court. It works for drilling, singles, or a neighborhood game when the two larger complexes are less convenient. Players who need indoor courts can use Pickleball HQ at 111 NJ-35 in Cliffwood. The climate controlled club has 11 full size courts and two skinny singles courts, reservations, drop in play, clinics, lessons, and tournaments.

Classes for New and Improving Players

Hazlet Recreation offers a direct beginner path at the James J. Cullen Center in Veterans Park. The current beginner class is a six week Tuesday session from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., running September 8 through October 13. Intermediate players have a six week Thursday session from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., running September 10 through October 15. Each session costs $70 and uses the township's CommunityPass registration system.

A first time player should begin in the beginner class, learn scoring, serving, the two bounce rule, and non volley zone positioning, then arrange practice at Veterans Park or Beers Street. The intermediate class is better for someone who can keep score and sustain rallies but wants stronger shot selection and doubles movement.

Pickleball HQ provides another route through clinics, private lessons, group lessons, and skill based programs. Its indoor setting is useful when a player wants instruction outside the township's six week class dates. Individual training is also available through local pickleball coaches.

Lessons, Programs, and Organized Play

Hazlet Recreation programs are the main local source for scheduled instruction. The beginner and intermediate sessions meet at the Cullen Center, while the public outdoor courts remain self organized. Beers Street and Veterans Park do not have a published daily open play host, assigned skill groups, or formal paddle rotation.

For organized games, Pickleball HQ offers drop in play and skill based programs throughout the week. It also runs clinics, tournaments, and social play. The club's current operating hours are 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Visitors do not need a membership.

A regular Hazlet group can use the public courts on its own schedule. A player arriving alone will get a more predictable game from a registered indoor session, where the program supplies a rotation and players at a defined level.

Guest and Visitor Information

Visitors with partners can play at Veterans Park or Beers Street Park without joining the swim club. Veterans Park is the more useful mixed recreation stop, while Beers Street is focused on its six newer pickleball courts. Both operate from dawn to dusk, and neither offers advance court reservations. Bring paddles, outdoor balls, water, and enough players to form a game.

A solo visitor should choose organized play at Pickleball HQ in Cliffwood. The club accepts nonmembers, operates indoors, and offers drop in sessions by skill along with private court reservations. Its extended evening hours make it more dependable for a short trip than arriving at a public court and hoping to meet a compatible group.

Freedom Park is a quiet fallback for one on one practice. For a full doubles group, start with Beers Street or Veterans Park because each has six courts and more room for simultaneous games.
